Sharing Energy

Hi, it has been a while between blog posts. I am working on connecting to a wider audience, sharing salka with more people. My new book (‘The Andean Cosmovision’), of course, is a major piece of that. If you would spread the word on it I would really appreciate it. I have also begun to reconnect with academia about all of this. I have a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and I am a part time associate professor of psychology at the University of Utah. Last week I gave a presentation entitled ‘The Andean Cosmovision: A Path to a Deeper Connection with Nature’ at an ecopsychology conference. On October 28th I will be giving a presentation entitled ‘The Andean Cosmovision: An Ancient Path to a New Reality’ as the inaugural speaker in the Distinguished Lecture Series sponsored by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences here at the university. I mention this because I want to be planting seeds that may blossom into more opportunities in the future.

The meditative process I would like to share in this post is so simple. In the Andes, when a waiki (friend/sister/brother) is very low in energy he or she may ask another waiki if they can borrow some energy, to be paid back at some point in the future (e.g. at the next full moon). If this is agreed upon then they will sit on the ground, gently leaning against each other, touching shoulders. The one waiki uses intent to give energy to the other, who uses intent to receive that energy. They continue this until the process is complete. That is it.

This seems so simple, but the times I have tried it (either as the giver or the receiver) it has worked like a charm (but please see the post on ‘Fallacies‘). There are times when I have lots of energy and can share some with my waikis, there are times when my energy is really low and I could use some. The Andean meditations provide numerous ways for conserving and recharging energy on our own, and I generally rely upon them, but there are times when it is really nice to get a hand up from a friend.

I find it interesting that don Americo presented this as a loan of energy rather than as a gift of energy (although it can be a gift, of course, if you prefer). I may be reading too much into that but it does fit my general sense of the Andean Cosmovision where everything is kept in balance. This is not a moralistic path, there is nothing ‘wrong’ about always being a source of energy for others or always drawing energy from others, but either stance seems fraught with consequences and neither fits my ideal of how I want to dance through my life.

Thanks Angela for reminding me of this meditation.

Escaping the Bottle

Many thanks to my friend Angela for sharing her notes from don Americo’s workshop here in Utah in July.

Observe what is doing you harm. Sometimes our Being, our energy, gets caught in a bottle. Take responsibility for getting out of the bottle. Figure out the most intelligent way to get out of that bottle. Get out of the bottle and don’t go in again. Remember that it is always a magician who is caught in a bottle. And as a bit of common sense…don’t climb into other people’s bottles.

In the bottle your energy cannot flow. There are many doors and windows for escaping the bottle. Our minds can make things very complicated. You simply have to free the flow of your energy and you will be out of the bottle: sit next to a stream and with your intent connect your energy to the flowing water of the stream; get in touch with your salka energy (it always flows); or connect to the Cosmos with profound trust. Total fluidity comes when we are dissolved into the Cosmos, like dissolving into the aroma of a beautiful flower.

Cosmic Circle

This is a meditation that don Americo showed us at the most recent workshops in Utah. It is such a basic, beautiful process.

1) While standing, put your hands out in front of you at the level of your waist with your palms facing the Pachamama. Using your intent, connect through your hands with the energy of the Pachamama. Savor that a bit, letting the connection grow.

2) Then slowly raise your hands above your head, bringing the energy of the Pachamama with you, until your palms are facing up to the Cosmos, and send the energy of the Pachamama to the Cosmos.

3) Now, receive the energy of the Cosmos as it flows back down into your hands. With your intent, collect the energy in your right hand.

4) When you have collected energy from the Cosmos slowly bring your two palms together (still over your head) and let the energy flow from your right hand into your left hand and down into the left side of your Being.

5) Bring both hands down slowly to your heart and transform that energy into love.

6) Again put your hands out in front of you at waist level and send that love down to the Pachamama.

I like to enjoy that last step for a while and then I repeat the cycle a couple more times, getting in touch with the circular flow of energy from the Pachamama to me to the Cosmo, from the Cosmos back into me, transforming it into love, and sending it to the Pachamama. It can be a most eloquent and touching dance of ourselves, the Pachamama, and the Cosmos.

Three Stones Energy Alignment

This meditation is a very nice way to start to work with quyas (also spelled q’uyas). A quya is a stone with which you have a special relationship. Working with quyas is a neighborhood of the Andean Cosmovision we haven’t visited before in this blog, it is well worth exploring.

For this meditation you need to find three stones to serve as quyas. You will be lying down and placing the quyas on various locations of your body, and so that will influence the size and shape of the stones you select. As the stones will be resting on your body that limits their size (i.e. smaller than a boulder). I like the stones to be heavy enough to feel their presence on my body (i.e. larger than a pebble). It is also nice if the stone is not so round that it keeps rolling off. Smooth, flattish, stones from a river seem to work particularly well. To find your quyas go to a place that has a selection of stones (e.g. a river bank). Use your intent to identify those stones that are willing to be in relationship with you. This part of the process will be different for everyone, some people look for stones that kind of ‘stand out’ as they let their eyes wander over the stones, or they detect stones that seem to want to speak to them, or they just get a feeling when considering the stone. You may want to pick up the stone to see/hear/feel if it is willing to come into relationship with you. Just use your intent, sincere pretending, and come back with three stones.

Before starting check out your energy, what it feels like to be you right now. This will be the baseline for noticing the effect of the meditation. Lie on your back and place one quya on your forehead (over your yachay…the center of your intellect), place the second quya over your heart (over your munay…the center of your emotions), and place the third quya just below your navel (over your llankay…the center of your physical body). Take a few deep breaths and relax. Then, with intent, connect each of your three energy centers with their corresponding quyas. Continue to relax and let the quyas align and harmonize your energy centers. Attend to your energy and to your connections with the quyas. Lie there for as long as you would like or far as long as you experience that shifts are occurring in your energy. When you are finished, remove (and thank) the quyas, sit up and notice how you feel. Any shift in what your energy was like before the meditation and what it is like after the meditation is by definition the effect the meditation has on you. If you like that effect then add this to your repertoire of how to be a maestro of your own energy, how to be in relationship with Nature, and how to make your life a work of art.
